Small town Memorial Day parades that wind through cemeteries with students earnestly reciting the Gettysburg Address can also echo vulnerability and patriotism for me.

Absolutely, Jay. One of my earliest memories—I can't have been more than eight—is being at a Memorial Day parade. It was probably just a couple of cars and a high school band and a group of veterans. But I could feel my heart swell up.
